"Albuquerque Soaring" is fine with me.

So is "Moriarty Soaring"

One or the other.

It is, and has been for many years, quite obvious where our field is located. It is found on every one of our posted OLC flights - AND the "Albuquerque Soaring" XC pilots have already made Moriarty a very bright spot on the luminous map of the soaring world.

After much reflection on this issue, I’m having a bit of a problem with a name change since we have built our reputation as Albuquerque Soaring. On the other hand, I understand the need to improve our relationship with the city of Moriarty even though soaring in general and the club in particular is responsible for the current state and for that matter the future state of development at 0E0.
Having said that, what about calling ourselves, “Albuquerque Soaring at Moriarty.” Would that be a workable compromise?

Good point, Carl. I forgot about that distinction. We purposely chose to use "Albuquerque Soaring" not "Albuquerque Soaring Club" as our OLC Club name. The intent was to be able to include any friends that fly with us, club or not.

By the way Renny, "El Guapo" is too close to "El Guano" for comfort. If "El Presidente" doesn't have good reading glasses, you may become "El Desaparacedo"

Yes, Renny, we've noticed that you have opted for the extreme dihedral wings of the turkey vulture, rather than the less stable wings of the golden eagle. ; - )

Have you ever seen what a turkey vulture does when it is excited?

Carl (who is sticking with "Albuquerque Soaring")

All,
Please keep in mind that this question surfaced in Towlines and the question was raised by "El Presidente." I am sure that El Guapo welcomes your comments, deep thoughts and recommendations!

Personally I am partial to a completely new and exciting name......
"High Plains Turkey Vultures" .....
but I am not holding my breath.... oh well.. ;-)

I agree with Carl. Leave at is "Albuquerque Soaring". Moriarty already gets a plug on OLC for the location.

The fact is that NO ONE is now competing as a member of the "Albuquerque Soaring Club." We ARE ALL competing as members of "Albuquerque Soaring," a coalition of pilots flying XC mostly out of Moriarty (and yes, a few who fly more out of other airports). When I first started flying OLC (2001?) I was logging my flights under "Albuquerque Soaring Club," or "ASC." Later, Brian got us organized, and made the name more general : "Albuquerque Soaring." I have always thought that this was to include our colleagues from Albuquerque flying with Rick and not members of ASC. "Albuquerque Soaring" is no different than "AFZ Unterwoessen," which includes smaller clubs flying (mostly) from the same site.

In short, what we now have works for us, and has struck fear in the hearts of our competitors. Let's not mess with it.

There was talk of changing our OLC name to Moriarty Soaring in the second year of ASC participation. We decided to stay with ASC because it would direct people to the name of a city with an airport for visitors to come find us (Albuquerque). Thinking that Moriarty would be too small of a location to find. But, now with Google maps there really is no excuse for not being able to find such small towns. It's true that since we have more than ASC members on the OLC roster, we need to change the name. Hopefully it doesn't create two separate entities, though.

Connie,
Not a bad idea! I would recommend that the board talk to Rick and select several names for consideration. We can all then respond with our "preference" and then a final name can be selected in secret.

This process can be similar to that process used to select the new Pope. The board and Rick will be locked in a hangar and when we see the "white smoke," we will know that a new OLC name has been picked. ;-)

How about giving Rick a plug and making the name the Moriarty Sundancers.

Geoff,
The reason for the possible change is that the Moriarty City Council would like to see "Moriarty" recognized in some fashion or other. They would like to see us change the name of the club to something like the "Moriarty Soaring Club," but short of that the idea is to possibly include "Moriarty" in our OLC name....Thx - 3R

not nearly as creative, but I figured that I would mention ASC or 0E0

All,
Per Bob's thoughts in Towlines for (possibly) changing our "name" for the OLC (for the next OLC "year"), here are some other "names" to add to his list:

Moriarty Air Devils (MAD)
Moriarty Air Angels (MAA) - Equal time!
Moriarty Soaring Fanatics (MSF)
Moriarty Soaring Gang (MSG)
Estancia Valley Soaring (EVS)
Soar Moriarty (SM)
Moriarty Gliders (MG)
Moriarty Soaring Squadron (MSS)
Moriarty Glider Wing (MGW)

and of course we could simply have:

"Moriarty Soaring"

Thx - 3R
